Understanding Pop-up Designs

Pop-up campers 1990-2000's
Originally (~1990's) pop-up campers were designed as a low cost camping experience for a family of 4-6 to get out on short trips. The majority of pop up included 2 slide outs for bed, a refrig, a small "galley" (sink, electric burner) with full surrounding canvas (w/ zipper screen/plastic for insulation). Additions were added to include a "side slide out" and shower/toilet combo.
Even today 2024, most "upscale" pop-up campers have the same design basis as the 1990's. See below for basic model from a brand (Forest River).
RV Elite Designs - 2024
- Top RV brands:
- Winnebago,
- Airstream,
- Jayco
- Weight : most leading brands seek to reduce weight by materials and innovative designs and quality construction. Popup campers can range from 1400lbs to 3000lbs. Slide outs are one of the heaviest items on popup.
- Space by using side slide-outs but costs towing weight significantly.
- Airstream Basecamp leads the industry in ergonomic designs with tons of niceties:
- locking spaces,
- corded spaces
- many, many ways to configure a small space.
- Energy-efficient appliances and solar-powered systems: There is a growing demand for these sustainable options in RVs.
- Earthy tones and natural elements: Color trends are moving towards warm tones and natural elements like wood and stone.
- Luxury RVs now include more and more frills : rooftop lounge, heated floor, lighting, and a high-end sound system. More space means more extras.
- The A-frame campers provide similiar options as pop-up campers with added benefits of firm walls - but still include cramp space.
